Changes to the Donaldson Curriculum

Schools at the moment are going through a huge transformation with the Donaldson Curriculum. But what does this actually mean?

Changes to the Curriculum and how it will effect learners

These are:

The curriculum will be built around 4 core purposes.

These will ensure that all children will be:

  1. Ambitious capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives
  2. Enterprising, creative contributors who are ready to play a full part in life and work
  3. Ethical, informed citizens who are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world
  4. Healthy, confident individuals who are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society

and schools will have to provide opportunities for pupils to develop the skills needed to fulfil these purposes.

The curriculum as we know it is only one of the 4 areas. However, instead of separate subjects such a history, geography, science, PE, music etc, they are based around six areas of learning experiences.

There are also three strands that are integrated throughout the whole curriculum. These are literacy, numeracy and numeracy and digital competency.
